Family EMDR Therapy Vancouver

Family EMDR therapy in Vancouver offers a trauma-informed approach for families experiencing conflict, disconnection, difficult transitions, or painful patterns that feel hard to change. Using EMDR and relational therapy approaches, we explore what is happening beneath the surface while helping family members feel understood, supported, and connected.

Often what looks like a problem between people is actually a cycle everyone has gotten caught in, each person carrying their own history and their own ways of protecting themselves. Together we work to help every person in the room feel genuinely seen, find new ways of reaching for each other, and build relationships that have more room for honesty, repair, and connection.

What is EMDR Family Therapy?

Family EMDR therapy combines EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) with relational and attachment-based approaches. Rather than focusing only on behaviours or disagreements, family EMDR explores the experiences, emotions, and protective patterns that influence how family members relate to one another.

Each person in a family carries their own history, their own nervous system, and their own ways of protecting themselves. Those protective strategies often made a lot of sense at some point. In family sessions we get curious about what those strategies are trying to do, what is underneath the behaviour, and what each person is actually needing and longing for from the people they love.

EMDR can be integrated into family work to help individual members process experiences that are showing up in the family dynamic. When one person carries unresolved pain, it ripples through the whole system. EMDR helps settle what has been stuck so that new ways of relating become possible.

Sessions are collaborative and move at a pace that feels manageable for everyone involved. Safety and consent are always the priority.

What Brings Families to Therapy?

Families come to therapy for many different reasons. You might be navigating ongoing conflict or tension that feels impossible to resolve. There may have been a significant change, a separation or divorce, a loss, a new family structure, or a child or teen who is struggling.

Sometimes it is harder to name, just a sense that everyone is disconnected, that communication has broken down, or that the same arguments keep happening without anything shifting.

Understanding the System

We shift away from identifying a 'problem person' and instead look at the patterns and cycles that have developed over time.

Nervous System Regulation

EMDR helps settle individual unresolved pain that ripples through the family, allowing new ways of relating to become possible.

Stronger Connections

Discovering protective strategies underneath behaviours helps family members feel genuinely seen and reach for each other again.

A Note on the Process

Family therapy looks different from individual therapy, as it involves supporting multiple people, perspectives, and relationships within the same session.

Sessions are available in 50, 80, and 120 minute formats. Longer sessions are often recommended for family work, as they provide enough time and space for everyone to participate, feel heard, and work through concerns together at a comfortable pace.

I may also meet with family members individually at times in service of the family as a whole. Everything we do is in service of the relationships and the system, not any one person's agenda.
