Person looking out a window before starting EMDR therapy in Vancouver.

Starting therapy can feel overwhelming, especially if you are not sure what to expect. If you have been searching for EMDR therapy in Vancouver or are considering online EMDR counselling from anywhere in British Columbia, you may have questions about what actually happens during your first appointment.

Many people arrive feeling hopeful but also nervous. That is completely understandable. At EMDR Integrative Counselling, the goal of your first session is not to push you into difficult memories. Instead, it is about creating safety, understanding your story, and building the foundation for meaningful healing.

Whether you choose in-person EMDR counselling in Vancouver or secure online sessions, your first appointment is designed to help you feel informed, supported, and in control of the process.

Your First EMDR Session Is About Building Safety

One of the biggest misconceptions about EMDR therapy is that eye movements or trauma processing begin immediately.

In reality, EMDR follows a structured, evidence-based approach that prioritizes preparation before reprocessing. During your first session—and often several sessions afterward—we focus on getting to know each other, understanding what brings you to therapy, and creating the emotional safety needed for deeper work.

If you expected to begin processing traumatic memories right away but instead find yourself having a conversation, asking questions, and learning about EMDR, that is completely normal.

The preparation phase is not a delay—it is an essential part of successful EMDR counselling.

Getting to Know You

During your first session, we spend time exploring what has brought you to therapy and what you hope to achieve.

You are welcome to share as much or as little as feels comfortable.

There is no expectation that you tell your entire story or revisit painful memories before you are ready.

Instead, we may discuss:

  • Your current concerns

  • Your goals for therapy

  • Previous counselling experiences

  • How trauma or anxiety affects your daily life

  • Questions you have about EMDR therapy

At EMDR Integrative Counselling, transparency is an important part of the therapeutic relationship. If you want to understand why I am asking certain questions or how EMDR works, I will gladly explain the process.

Learning About EMDR Therapy

Your first appointment is also an opportunity to understand how EMDR therapy works and why it is considered one of the most effective treatments for trauma and PTSD.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) helps the brain process memories that have become "stuck" after overwhelming experiences.

Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR does not require you to repeatedly describe traumatic events in detail. Instead, it helps your brain naturally process memories so they become less emotionally distressing over time.

Many people seek EMDR therapy in Vancouver because it offers an evidence-based approach for treating:

  • PTSD

  • Complex PTSD

  • Childhood trauma

  • Anxiety

  • Panic attacks

  • Disturbing life experiences

  • Attachment wounds

Building a Strong Foundation Before Trauma Processing

Before beginning any reprocessing work, we spend time developing resources that help your nervous system feel more regulated.

This phase is often called resourcing or stabilization.

Depending on your needs, we may practice:

  • Grounding techniques

  • Breathing exercises

  • Visualization strategies

  • Mindfulness skills

  • Nervous system regulation

  • Emotional regulation tools

These skills help you feel more prepared for future EMDR sessions and provide practical tools you can use between appointments.

For people living with complex trauma, this preparation phase is especially valuable because it allows healing to happen without becoming overwhelming.

When Does EMDR Reprocessing Begin?

Once you feel ready and we have established a strong foundation, we begin the reprocessing phase of EMDR.

Together, we identify memories or experiences that continue to affect your life today.

During reprocessing, we explore:

  • Images connected to the memory

  • Emotions

  • Physical sensations

  • Negative beliefs about yourself

  • Desired positive beliefs

While holding these experiences in mind, bilateral stimulation—such as guided eye movements or tapping—is used to activate the brain's natural healing process.

Throughout the session, I check in regularly.

There is no right or wrong way to experience EMDR.

You do not need to force anything or perform in a particular way. Your role is simply to notice what arises, while I guide the process in a way that feels manageable and collaborative.

What Happens After Your First Session?

Everyone responds differently after beginning therapy.

Some people leave feeling:

  • Relieved

  • Hopeful

  • Emotionally tired

  • Curious

  • Calm

Others notice very little immediately.

All of these experiences are completely normal.

Between sessions, it is also common to notice:

  • New insights

  • Dreams

  • Memories

  • Emotions

  • Shifts in how you respond to everyday situations

These changes often reflect the brain continuing to organize and integrate experiences between appointments.

You Are Always in Control

One of the most important aspects of EMDR counselling is that you remain in control throughout the entire process.

Healing cannot be rushed.

We move at a pace that feels safe for you.

You decide what you want to work on, and if something does not feel right, we pause, adjust, or take a different approach.

At EMDR Integrative Counselling, therapy is collaborative. You bring your lived experience, strengths, and goals. I bring specialized training in trauma therapy, EMDR, attachment, somatic approaches, AEDP, and nervous system regulation. Together, we create a treatment plan that supports lasting healing while respecting your unique needs.
