If you experience anxiety, you have probably been told to think more positively. To challenge your negative thoughts. To remind yourself that the thing you are worried about probably will not happen. To breathe and focus on the facts.

And you have probably noticed that this does not always work.

You can know that your worry is irrational. You can list all the evidence against it. You can remind yourself of every time the feared thing did not happen. And still, your body continues reacting as if danger is present.

This is not a failure of willpower, intelligence, or effort. It is a reflection of something important about how anxiety actually works.

Anxiety is not only a thinking problem. It is a nervous system response.

This is one of the reasons many people seek EMDR therapy in Vancouver or online EMDR therapy in BC when they feel stuck between what they know logically and what they continue to feel emotionally.

Anxiety does not live only in the thinking mind

Anxiety is often described as a thought problem. The anxious mind catastrophizes, overestimates danger, and creates worst-case scenarios.

And while anxious thoughts are real and worth exploring, focusing only on thoughts misses where anxiety often begins.

Anxiety is a nervous system state.

It is part of the same survival system designed to protect us from threats. When anxiety activates, the body prepares to respond to danger. Heart rate increases, muscles tense, breathing changes, and attention narrows toward possible threats.

The brain shifts into protection mode, scanning for what could go wrong.

This response happens faster than conscious thought.

By the time you notice that you are anxious, your nervous system may already be activated. Trying to think your way out of an activated nervous system can feel impossible because the body’s alarm system has already started responding.

This is why many people looking for anxiety therapy in Vancouver discover that understanding their anxiety is helpful, but not always enough to change how anxiety feels in the body.

Why telling yourself to calm down rarely works

During high anxiety states, the parts of the brain responsible for perspective, reasoning, and problem-solving become less accessible.

This is why logical reassurance often does not work in the middle of an anxiety response.

It is not because you are not rational enough. It is because anxiety is not operating primarily through logic in those moments.

The nervous system is responding based on what it has learned from previous experiences.

When your body believes there is danger, simply telling yourself that everything is fine often does not create the sense of safety you are looking for.

Anxiety as prediction

One of the most helpful ways to understand anxiety is through the idea of prediction.

The brain is constantly predicting what will happen next based on previous experiences. When past experiences involved fear, unpredictability, loss, or threat, the nervous system learns to anticipate those experiences happening again.

Anxiety is often the nervous system’s prediction that something bad is about to happen.

That prediction may not match the actual level of danger in the present moment. However, because it is happening at the level of the nervous system, it often cannot be changed through logic alone.

What updates these predictions is new experience.

The nervous system needs opportunities to learn that the present is different from the past.

This is one reason EMDR therapy can be effective for anxiety. EMDR works with the experiences and memories that shaped the nervous system’s responses, helping the brain process what feels unresolved and develop a more adaptive understanding.

Why EMDR therapy works for anxiety

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a trauma-informed therapy approach that helps the brain process distressing experiences that continue to affect the present.

For anxiety, EMDR can help address:

  • persistent fear responses

  • panic and overwhelm

  • anxiety connected to past experiences

  • negative beliefs about yourself

  • feeling unsafe even when you know you are safe

  • the gap between what you understand intellectually and what your body continues to feel

Rather than trying to force anxious thoughts away, EMDR helps the nervous system update the experiences that created those patterns.

Over time, the alarm system can become less reactive. The nervous system can learn that the present is not the past.

The goal is not to erase difficult experiences. It is to help those experiences become integrated so they no longer carry the same level of emotional intensity.
